The College of Pharmacy is mourning the death of Dr. Leroy Knodel, an inspired educator and a truly great man. He died unexpectedly on Friday, August 21, 2015 of a heart attack.

Knodel joined the college in the early 1980s and quickly became a favorite among pharmacy students, faculty and staff.

He served as a clinical professor and assistant head of the college’s Pharmacotherapy Division located on the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA). He coordinated experiential pharmacy education for the San Antonio region and taught Advanced Evidence based Practice in the Pharm.D. program. He served as administrative director of the Pharmacotherapy Office of Evidence-Based and Interprofessional Education. He also was a tenured associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UTHSCSA.  Leroy was equally engaged with the education of medical students as he was with student pharmacists.

“Leroy was dedicated to the development of students, and he touched many lives,” said Dean Lynn Crismon.  “He gave of himself unselfishly both professionally and personally.  His death leaves a vacuum in our college.”

“The family expressed how much Leroy loved our students,” said Dean Crismon. “They want the students to know this by setting up a scholarship fund.”

The family has requested that memorial gifts be designated to The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. Click on the link to make a gift to the Knodel Fund. Be sure to add Knodel Memorial Fund in the special information box on the lower right hand side of the page to assure that your gift is credited to the Knodel fund.   For additional questions concerning gifts to the College of Pharmacy, contact the college Development Office at 512. 232-2779.
