Academic Instructional Fellowship

About the Program

The Post-doctoral Academic Instructional Fellowship at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy is a 12-month mentored training program for pharmacists with a strong interest in pursuing careers in pharmacy education.

The program will provide extensive experiences in classroom and experiential teaching, educational research, and service. In addition, the program aims to equip the fellow with the skills necessary to be successful as a pharmacy educator, as well as to foster teaching innovation to advance pharmacy education and practice.

Program Details

Throughout the year, the fellow will be immersed in the following experiences and academic responsibilities:

Teaching

  • Pharmacy Practice Laboratory courses
  • Didactic lecture in required and elective courses
  • Experiential teaching in clinical areas of interest

The fellow may also engage in presentations and mentoring activities outside of the instructional setting.

Scholarship

  • Completion of a research certificate program
  • Development of independent research project(s)
  • Participation in writing working groups
  • Presentation of research poster at a national meeting

By the end of the fellowship year, the fellow will prepare at least one manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

Service

  • Active participation in college committees
  • Precepting student activities
  • Mentorship engagement

The program will prepare trainees for success in a future faculty position.

Program Structure

Throughout the year, the fellow will be immersed in teaching, scholarship, service, professional development and mentoring experiences, as well as special projects as assigned.

The program consists of longitudinal teaching responsibilities, elective clinical experiences and exposure to each aspect of academic pharmacy. 

To ensure a well-rounded experience, in addition to working with and mentorship from other faculty, the fellow will also spend time with the administrative teams in experiential education, academic affairs, student affairs, business affairs, and development.

The schedule of the fellowship year will be customized based on the fellow’s areas of interest as well as the administrative needs of the college.

Stipend and Benefits

The fellowship year is August 1 through July 31, and the fellow will receive a competitive fellowship salary.

The program will also provide registration and travel funds to cover the cost of attendance at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in December and the AACP Annual Meeting in July.

Location

The College of Pharmacy has two campuses - one in Austin, Texas, on the ‘40 acres’ of the UT Austin campus and one at the UT Medical Center in San Antonio, TX.

 The fellow will have in-person teaching responsibilities primarily on the Austin campus.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements
  • Pharm.D. 
  • Completion of a PGY-1 residency or equivalent experience
  • Eligibility for licensure in TX
