It was a record-breaking season for Longhorn P4 student pharmacists seeking residencies through the 2016 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) match program.
Of the 51 students seeking postgraduate year-1 residency positions (PGY-1), 45 successfully matched in one of the two rounds completed in early April. The number represents the largest number of UT students to successfully match in college history.
“Not only is 45 the largest number of UT student pharmacists that we have had successfully match for a PGY-1 residency position, the 88.2% match rate is the highest match rate that we have had since we began keeping records of this information,” said Dean M. Lynn Crismon.
The UT success rate of 88.2% compares with a national match percentage of 66%. ASHP reports that 4,273 individuals matched with more than 2,000 pharmacy residency programs during the 2016 program. The number represents an increase of 300 residency positions over the 2015 match.
In addition, UT Austin has a 94.4% success rate among 2015 Pharm.D. graduates seeking postgraduate year-2 residencies (PGY-2).
“For PGY-2, a total of 17 of our 18 graduates successfully matched or had early acceptance,” Crismon continued. “This is most impressive and is also likely a new UT record.”
In congratulating all of those making matches, Crismon pointed to the role of college faculty and preceptors who spend extensive time and effort fostering the professional development of Longhorn students.
“These results reflect the work of outstanding faculty and preceptors whose teaching and mentoring foster learning, clinical skills, and professional development in the bright, enthusiastic and determined young women and men who make up our student body,” Crismon concluded.
Students who failed to match have an opportunity to participate in the 2016 Post-Match Scramble that began with submission of applications at noon on April 11. ASHP recommends that programs make their offers to candidate participating in the post scramble beginning on April 15.
