Longhorn student pharmacists captured first place in the National Student Pharmacist Compounding Competition conducted in Florida during Spring Break.
The three-person team, including Jade Fitzsimmons, P3; Hannah Bustillos, P2; and Christine Borunda, P1, competed against teams from 18 schools of pharmacy across the country to capture the top spot in the event sponsored by Medisca, the Medics Network, and the LP3 Network. Sponsors presented the champions with trophies and a $1,000 check to the college.
The competition includes three major sections.
In the first, students were provided a prescription and were challenged to formulate and compound the product in the practical laboratory.
Under the regulatory challenge, students were required to create a poster presentation that demonstrated the proper implementation of hazardous drug compounding in both non-sterile and sterile environments.
In the knowledge challenge, students participated in a Jeopardy-style session that tested their knowledge of basic pharmaceutics and compounding.
Faculty advisor and mentor for the team is Dr. Nathan Pope, clinical assistant professor of health outcomes and pharmacy practice.
