Dr. Janet Walkow has been named among 100 Inspiring Women in STEM by the national publication INSIGHT Into Diversity.

Walkow, the executive director and chief technology officer of the Drug Dynamics Institute at The University of Texas at Austin’s College of Pharmacy, is included in the magazine’s September release.

The awards honor women who inspire and encourage young women to consider studying in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The mother of three daughters, Walkow has worked tirelessly to further opportunities for young women.

“Women who work in STEM fields enjoy significant opportunities to engage in new discoveries and innovations on a global scale,” said Walkow. “For years, these opportunities were limited for women. I am delighted that today, bright, hard-working young women can soar in STEM fields, and I am dedicated to helping them break down whatever barriers they may encounter.”

As a member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, she developed the Women in Science platform for young women to learn about STEM careers. In addition, she co-founded the Leading Women Project to teach women how to lead and manage others. She serves on the Health Promotion Council of Pennsylvania and on the Harvard Kennedy School Women’s Leadership Board.

“Janet Walkow is an outstanding member of our faculty and she is passionately committed to efforts that empower women, not only in this country, but in several third world countries,” said Dean Lynn Crismon.

“I am delighted to see Janet listed among these remarkable women who continue to make a significant difference through mentoring and teaching, research and other efforts worthy of this national recognition. She never ceases to amaze me regarding what she is able to accomplish,” Crismon continued.

Walkow earned her Ph.D. in pharmacy from UT Austin in 1982 after earning his B.A. in the Plan II Honors Program in 1977.
