Dr. Marvin Shepherd

Clifford L. Klinck, Jr. Centennial Professor Emeritus in Pharmacy

Dr. Marvin Shepherd’s research interests lie in the major areas of the economics of pharmacy services, pharmaceutical marketing, importation of pharmaceuticals, prescription drug diversion, counterfeit medications, managed care pharmacy and pharmacoeconomics. He has an intense interest in conducting research that examines the policies related to drug importation and re-importation, especially from Mexico, the use of drug anti-counterfeiting strategies and techniques for monitoring prescription drug diversion. He is also involved in conducting research on the economics of pharmacy practice, such as cost of dispensing, prescription drug pricing issues, the extent of generic drug use and other policies which affect drug use within the Medicaid population. Dr. Shepherd also enjoys pharmaceutical marketing research, especially measuring the impact of direct-to-consumer drug advertising.

Marv Shepherd earned his B.S. in biology (1969) from Michigan Technological University, a B.S. in pharmacy from Ferris State University (1975), M.S. from the University of Rhode Island (1978) and Ph.D. from Purdue University (1980).  In 1969, he received his commission in the U.S. Army and served with the 10th Special Forces Group (Green Berets). He is currently the Director of the Center for Pharmacoeconomic Studies College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Shepherd’s research interests have covered examining generic drug use, pharmaceutical marketing strategies including direct to consumer advertising, coupon use and pricing, the impact of the Medicare Part D prescription drug program on community pharmacies, managed care, pharmacoeconomics. He has also studied the spread of counterfeit medications and drug diversion worldwide.  He has over 100 publications, six book chapters and is an editor of the textbook,Pharmacy Management Leadership, Marketing and Finance.

He has conducted research on drug importation, drug counterfeiting and drug diversion for close to 20 years. His research and expertise on drug diversion, importation and drug counterfeiting has been featured on CNN News, NPR Radio: First Edition, Newsweek, Wall Street Journal, Money Magazine, Time Magazine, Prevention Magazine, US News and World Report, New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, plus many other national newspapers, magazines and television and radio news broadcasts He has testified before U.S. Congress four times on drug importation, prescription drug diversion and counterfeit drugs. His research on the extent Rohypnol, (the date rape drug) was entering the U.S. from Mexico, was instrumental in the U.S. banning of the product in 1997.  In 2006, he received the Award of Excellence from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists for his work on drug counterfeiting and drug importation. By invitation from the U.S. Commerce Department, he participated in the 2008 and 2009 Anti-Counterfeit Drug Conferences in Beijing, China.

Dr. Shepherd is currently the President of the Partnership for Safe Medicines, an organization dedicated to fighting counterfeit medications, drug diversion and informing health professionals and consumers about fake, substandard and diverted drug products.  In 2010, he was appointed to the Drug Packaging and Distribution Committee of the United States Pharmacopeia.

Other Interests

I am married and Valerie and I have two children, Josh and Monica who also reside in Austin, TX.  Valerie and I also have two dogs, dachshunds named Lucy and Molly. They are a lot of fun and keep us busy. In addition, we are owners of some longhorn cattle.  I love outdoors activities, especially fly fishing and enjoy the art and creativity of tying my own flies.  I also enjoy gardening, cooking outside.  I am a collector of toy Lionel trains and every holiday season I set up a large winter scene train layout.
