The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy is proud to celebrate Hugh D. C. Smyth, Ph.D., Alcon Centennial Professor and Professor of Molecular Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery, as the 2026 recipient of the William M. Heller Mentor of the Year Award from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE).
A highly visible national honor, the William M. Heller Mentor of the Year Award recognizes faculty whose leadership, teaching and mentorship have made a profound impact on the development of students and emerging pharmaceutical scientists. Recipients are nominated by students and colleagues who have experienced their mentorship firsthand.
For Dr. Smyth, mentorship has been a defining part of an academic career dedicated not only to advancing pharmaceutical science, but also to developing the researchers who will carry that work forward.
"I am deeply honored to receive the William M. Heller Mentor of the Year Award," Dr. Smyth said. "Mentoring students and young scientists has been one of the most rewarding parts of my academic career. It is a privilege to watch them develop their own ideas, confidence and independence, and ultimately to see them succeed well beyond the laboratory."
Dr. Smyth's trainees have earned competitive fellowships, research awards and professional recognition while contributing to an extensive body of collaborative scholarship. His approach to mentorship emphasizes independence, confidence and an environment where developing scientists are encouraged to explore ideas, navigate challenges and grow into leaders in their fields.
One student described Dr. Smyth as a guide who knows when to offer direction while allowing trainees to chart their own paths, recalling his description of mentorship as serving as a "GPS system" for the journey. The student also highlighted his ability to remember individual goals and foster a supportive, collaborative laboratory culture.
"Congratulations to Hugh Smyth in receiving this prestigious award," said Sam Poloyac, Pharm.D., Ph.D., Dean and James T. Doluisio Regents Chair at the College of Pharmacy. "Hugh has been an outstanding mentor in his expertise area of drug delivery to so many Ph.D., Pharm.D., postdoctoral and undergraduate students over the years. Thank you as well to AFPE for the vital support you provide to our faculty and students."
Beyond his contributions as a mentor, Dr. Smyth leads research focused on drug delivery, formulation science and pharmaceutical engineering. His laboratory develops novel approaches to inhalation, nasal, transdermal, ophthalmic and oral drug delivery, with an emphasis on translating new technologies to the clinic.
Dr. Smyth joins a distinguished group of William M. Heller Mentor of the Year recipients whose work spans pharmaceutical science, education, research and patient care. Through this recognition, his impact is measured not only by the research and innovation advanced throughout his career, but by the students and scientists he has helped prepare to make contributions of their own.
"Mentoring them has shaped my career just as surely as I hope I have helped shape theirs," Dr. Smyth said.
