Teaching and Leadership Fellows Program (TLFP)

Program Details

Program Pre-requisites

In order to participate in this program, one must be enrolled as a PGY1 or PGY2 pharmacy resident at a UT-affiliated residency program.

Two Participation Tracks

Track 1 (Clinical educator)
Teaching and leadership experience for residents interested in pursuing clinical educator positions at the completion of their residency. It is anticipated that this level is appropriate for most PGY1 residents.

Track 2 (Academia)
Teaching and leadership experience for residents with a goal of obtaining a faculty position with a college/school of pharmacy either at the completion of their residency and/or in the future. It is anticipated that this level is appropriate for PGY2 residents and/or some select PGY1 residents.

How Will I Learn?

The program starts with an in-person orientation session and then continues with regularly scheduled webinars throughout the year and meetings with program directors each semester.

In addition, there are assigned activities with self-reflections to enhance learning. Development and maintenance of a teaching portfolio is required. The portfolio will be maintained in the Canvas LMS. All instructions, assignments, readings, rubrics and essential information will be on the Canvas website. Check this site regularly, and use it to ask questions about the course schedule.

How to Succeed?

Program assignments and requirements must be completed by the established deadlines. Participate in webinars and other program activities as specified in the program syllabus.

Expected Resident Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, the resident will be able to:

  • Be prepared to pursue an entry-level position within the academy and/or as a clinical educator
  • Engage in professional self-discovery as a springboard for your professional career
  • Develop understanding of teaching theories and how to apply them in classroom and experiential settings
  • Establish a personal foundation of self-discovery and learn how to utilize your “hardwiring” to apply to career goals and planning
  • Develop understanding of leadership theories and how to apply these to personal and professional goals

Standards and Guidelines

Activities fulfill objectives related to Competency Areas R4: Teaching, Education, and Dissemination of Knowledge and R3: Leadership and Management of the ASHP Accreditation Standard for Postgraduate Year One (PGY1 ) Pharmacy Residency Programs(2014).

This program is also in response to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s (AACP) policy statement, “AACP encourages the inclusion of Teaching and Learning Curriculum (TLC) Programs, which meet national guidelines, in post-graduate pharmacy training programs including residencies and fellowships and encourages schools and colleges of pharmacy to provide such programs.” (Am J Health-Syst Pharm. 2014; 71:1292-302) This program was created following the American College of Clinical Pharmacy(ACCP) White Paper, Guidelines of Resident Teaching Experiences (Pharmacotherapy 2013;33(7):e147–e161).
