Barnes named Educator of the Year

Dr. Nile Barnes has been named educator of the year at the annual teaching awards reception. The annual spring event, hosted by Pharmacy Council, also saw teaching awards presented to faculty members elected by students in each professional year.

Barnes, a clinical assistant professor, is a member of the Health Outcomes and Pharmacy Practice Division. He coordinates the pharmacotherapy lab series and clinical skills courses including CPR training. In addition, he precepts pharmacist-interns and residents on the internal medicine clerkships at University Medical Center – Brackenridge.

In addition, to the Educator of the Year Award, students selected outstanding teachers from each of the professional years curriculum and named the preceptor of the year and outstanding teaching assistant.

P1 Year Teaching Excellence Award went to Dr. Rong Cui, an associate profesor of pharmaceutics.  His research focus is on drug delivery and vaccine adjuvant discovery.

P2 Year Teaching Excellence went to Dr. Bryson Duhon, clinical assistant professor of pharmacotherapy in San Antonio.  His principal interests include infectious diseases, diabetes, and innovative pedagogical techniques.  He teaches pharmacokinetics and both semesters of pharmacotherapy.

P3 Year Teaching Excellence went to Dr. Richard Wilcox, professor of pharmacology and toxicology.  Wilcox teaches and coordinates Pharmacotherapy III covering ten topics in neurology and psychiatry.  He also facilitates a pharmacotherapy case-based problem-solving lab.

The Preceptor of the Year was presented to Dr. George Valdez.  He serves as a pharmacist at the HEB in Buda.

The Teaching Assistant of the Year was presented to Siyuan Huang.  He is studying with Dr. Bill Williams in the Division of Pharmaceutics.  He has served as a teaching assistant for several courses, primarily pharmacokinetics.
