Baptist Health System includes 6 hospitals in the San Antonio market of Tenet Healthcare Corporation with ~1,750 licensed beds, an average daily census of ~850 patients, and a pharmacy staff of ~80 pharmacists and ~80 technicians. The pharmacy department utilizes an integrated practice model in which all pharmacists (staff/clinical pharmacists and clinical specialists) are involved with both pharmacy operations and clinical pharmacy services. The pharmacy department has a central IV lab for preparing TPN, chemotherapy, and IV batches as well as a central depot for ordering and repackaging drugs and for replenishing inventory, automated dispensing cabinets, and various medication trays and boxes. Pharmacists are engaged in order review and verification, patient profile and alert review, medication reconciliation, drug information questions, renal drug dosing, IV to PO conversion, anticoagulation monitoring, antimicrobial stewardship, pharmacotherapy consults, interdisciplinary patient care rounds, and patient counseling.

Graduate with a Pharm.D. degree from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy school
US citizen or permanent US resident – no visa sponsorship
Obtain licensure as a pharmacist in Texas by July 31
Complete on-site interview between January 1 and February 28
Pass pre-employment screening that includes a background check and a urine drug test
Be able to begin the residency the week of July 1 or the week before
The resident will be based at Northeast Baptist Hospital, but he/she will also complete rotations at all 5 Baptist hospitals. The Baptist Health System Residency Advisory Council oversees training at all Baptist hospitals and there are >10 preceptors across the 5 hospitals.
The PGY-1 pharmacy residency has the following required rotations:
(1) orientation and training for 4 weeks;
(2) pharmacy operations and clinical services for 4 weeks;
(3) critical care for 12 weeks;
(4) consults and antimicrobial stewardship for 8 weeks,
(5) adult medicine and surgery for 8 weeks,
(6) neonatology and pediatrics for 4 weeks,
(7) management and leadership for 4 weeks, and
(8) elective for 8 weeks.
Longitudinal experiences are 52 weeks and include pharmacy weekend staffing (every other weekend) and a quality improvement project. The residents give an oral presentation of their project at the Alcalde Southwest Leadership Conference for residents, fellows, and preceptors and a poster presentation of their project at the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Seminar. Additionally, residents do a pharmacotherapy rounds at the University of Texas College of Pharmacy and can participate in the Teaching & Leadership Fellows Program (TLFP) through this affiliation as well.
